When it comes to installing a new appliance or renovations, almost every homeowner would rather opt for the do-it-yourself technique. (We’re talking about you, Dad.) DIY saves money and time, and, upon completion, it offers a sense of accomplishment.

However, there are a few home appliance installations that you should leave to the professionals. Here’s Warner Service’s guide to the appliances that you should and shouldn’t DIY:

You should DIY…

  • Replacement windows. Installing a replacement window doesn’t have to be daunting. After determining whether the window is a full-frame or an insert replacement, gather the right tools and implement a realistic schedule.
  • Ceiling fans. Installing a ceiling fan takes about half a day and a few tools to complete. However, you’ll need to remove an existing light fixture and tackle basic electrical improvements for the fan to work on a circuit switch. To learn more, visit the DIY Network.
  • Carpets. With a tack strip cutter, hand stapler, and wall trimmer in hand, most homeowners can install a new carpet within a weekend. Though carpeting a room is no small feat, a few instructions from the pros will help you tackle this project.
  • Dryer vents. To speed up the drying process and prevent lint build-up, carefully install a smooth metal dryer vent. Homeowners should be careful with measurements and drilling, but this is an easy one-day project that should cost you less than $100.
  • Doors. Installing a door used to be a project for only the most talented carpenters. However, with a pre-hung door, which is already mounted on hinges, it’s easy for homeowners to install a door for their home. Since the pre-hung door is also cut and sized and the doorknob hole has already been drilled, homeowners have to worry about only measurements.

You shouldn’t DIY:

  • Plumbing. Whether it’s for the shower, dishwasher, or toilet, we advise leaving residential plumbing to the professionals. Understanding the pipe network and abiding by codes can be a lot to handle for those who haven’t mastered plumbing, so call an expert.
  • Hardwood flooring. Unlike carpet, hardwood flooring involves more than a few tools and some spare time. This project typically uses laminate or engineered hardwoods, which can look less appealing in your home. We suggest hiring a contractor to install high quality hardwood floor, most of which is dent-resistent.
  • Air conditioning. Unless you’re a licensed HVAC professional, air conditioning installation, indoor or outdoor, isn't for you. For the unit to work properly and efficiently, we suggest calling an expert.
  • Dishwashers. Installing a dishwasher requires knowledge of electrical wiring and plumbing. Most homeowners don't have that expertise, so we advise calling a professional.
  • Toilets. Replacing an old toilet can be easy if you have step-by-step instructions from professionals, but it's best to leave this project to an expert.

*Before you install a home appliance, read its warranty. Some companies void the warranty if a licensed professional isn’t performing the installation.

Do-it-yourself installations should be considered when it comes to a certain few appliances, but those that require expertise in electricity, plumbing, and HVAC should be handled by the pros.
