In a highly competitive field like HVAC, it's important to leave a lasting impression during the interview process. A few tricks that you can do before, during, and after the interview will ensure you lock up your dream heating and cooling career.

Before

Prepare Your Resume

Your resume is the opening statement to any employer. Bring at least three copies to the interview, and never assume they've reviewed it beforehand. Even if you've already submitted a copy online, hard copies show you're prepared.

In your resume, make your skills and education clear and concise. Most employers do only a quick scan before the interview, so highlight your most important attributes. Other elements to include are employment history (in sequential order), education, and any certifications.

A good rule of thumb is to limit your resume to two pages max, as employers don't have time to flip through a packet.

Refresh Your Knowledge

At this point, you should feel comfortable answering specific questions and discussing the industry. You're certified and trained, so you shouldn't have any problems during the interview, right?

Maybe. It's best to review industry news and common knowledge for HVAC technicians. Nothing's more awkward than being stuck without an answer to a question during an interview. This will leave a negative impression on your possible employer.

Also, review common questions asked during the interview process to gain confidence ahead of the meeting:

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • How does an air conditioning unit work?
  • Why should we hire you?

By reviewing these basic questions, you'll be more comfortable in the interview, and your employer will know you prepared.

During

Stay Confident

While confidence starts before the interview, it's important to demonstrate it during the interview, too. A few subtle tweaks to your demeanor can make a difference in your first impression.

The confidence building starts when you pick out what to wear during the interview. If you're confident in what you are wearing, you'll feel more powerful during the interview.

Confidence is one of the first qualities that your potential employer will notice. Re-emphasize this by greeting with a firm handshake and eye contact. This shows your employer you're excited and ready for this opportunity.

Continue the confidence through the interview by using these body language tips:

  • Stay engaged
  • Sit up straight
  • Don't fidget
  • Smile

This type of body language will mold a positive image of you in the eyes of your employer. This will be beneficial when they go back to review applicants.

Reverse The Interview

When given the opportunity to ask questions, demonstrate thorough research of the company. Asking questions about the company or their goals shows you've done your homework and care about the culture fit.

This will impress your employer (and maybe take them by surprise). Ask about:

  • The company’s mission
  • Short- and long-term goals
  • The definition of success
  • An average day in the position

Avoid asking about pay or benefits until an actual job offer. These questions could be interpreted as you're only looking for a paycheck.

After

Follow Up

It's important to follow up with your potential employer after the interview during that night or the next day. Sending an email thanking them for their time and consideration will give you another chance to leave an impression.

By doing this, you're showing your employer that you've given priority to this opportunity -- not going through the motions.

You can also be strategic in your follow-up, to re-emphasize your resume to your employer. Reference a relevant article or clarify an answer to a question you didn't feel confident in answering.

After sending the note, give your employer time to make their decision and avoid pestering them.

Use Time To Your Advantage

You can get a call from your employer at any time asking for a second interview. Prepare for the next set of interviews by remembering the previous questions they asked, so you can do more concise research. It may take time for the employer to get back to you, but don’t lose confidence.

Following these tips could put you at the top of your potential employer's list. If you're a certified HVAC technician in need of a great new workplace, check out how to apply at Warner Service
