Friendly plumber

Hiring a plumber is a difficult task. While you shop around, consider a few qualities of a great contractor. Start your comparison by asking these important questions to plumbing professionals before signing the contract:

Are you licensed? Many people assume that all plumbers have licenses, but this isn’t always the case. To avoid failing a home inspection or creating a bigger plumbing problem, ask to see all state and local licensing.

How long have you been in business? A more experienced plumber often offers a higher quality final product. They also often have a wider network of subcontractors and suppliers in the area.

Who are your suppliers and subcontractors? An upstanding contractor has no problem sharing where their supplies come from or who they hire to help. Whether it’s solid copper pipes or a long-lasting water heater, craftsmanship counts. It begins with trustworthy supplies and employees.

Is this an estimate? The difference between an estimate and a fixed price is hundreds of dollars. Be wary of any plumber who gives you an estimate over the phone. The best plumbers visit the job site or your home before calculating anything.

Also, inquire about similar past projects. This gives you a clearer understanding of the total estimate. This total estimate should include materials, labor, and a contingency plan.

Do you clean up your mess? It seems obvious that every plumber should clean up their mess. Yet, some companies don’t take care of old parts or boxes from new materials after finishing a plumbing job. This leaves you with extra chores even after paying top dollar for a replacement or repair.

Always ask to include cleanup. A few plumbing companies may charge extra, but it's worth it.

What if something breaks? The final contract should also include a guarantee or warranty. Pay attention to the fine print, though. Most warranties come with certain conditions depending on the plumbing project.

At this point, you should also check that the plumbing company is bonded and insured. Look for worker's compensation, liability insurance, property damage coverage, building permits, and zoning laws.

Do you have references? An established plumbing company is able to back up their superior reputation. A portfolio of professional plumbing projects is great. A few good reviews are even better. Ask your potential new plumber for a few references.

Once you get the necessary contact information, ask past customers the following questions:

  • Why did you hire this company?

  • Were you happy with the plumbing project?

  • Was the plumbing job completed on time?

  • Were there any unexpected expenses?

  • Was the final price reasonable for the job?

  • Would you use this plumber again?

  • Would you recommend this plumber?

  • How was your experience with the technician?

How do you expect payment? According to HomeAdvisor, “For larger jobs, most professionals charge per project milestone. If you’re working on a smaller project, most plumbers expect payment upon completion of the task. Never hire a pro who requires upfront payment.”

Asking these questions ensures that you hire someone who knows what they're doing. You're hiring a plumber who performs quality work. A plumber who won't leave you with an unfinished project.
